Jun 14, 2023 · Peniel is located beside the Jabbok River, with the modern name Nahr ez-Zerqa, in Jordan. Along the river is a hill where described in Genesis 32, and is believed to be Peniel. Joel shared that archaeologist Selah Merril first discovered the biblical site.
In the next verse and elsewhere it appears as "Penuel." The name is said to have been given to the place by Jacob after his night of wrestling by the Jabbok, because, as he said, "I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."

Genesis 32:22-32 records what happened when Jacob stayed at the ford of the Jabbok on his way back from Paddan-aram.
