The Albany River is the boundary between Kenora District to the north and the Thunder Bay and Cochrane Districts to the south. The river begins at Lake St. Joseph at an elevation of 371 metres (1,217 ft).

It issues from Cat Lake in the northwestern part of the province and on its eastward course to James Bay, the Albany River first flows through a network of interconnected lakes on the Canadian Shield, the largest being Lake St Joseph.
