The Central Subway is a Muni Metro light rail tunnel in San Francisco, California, United States. It runs between Chinatown station in Chinatown and a portal in South of Market (SoMa), with intermediate stops at Union Square/Market Street station in Union Square and Yerba Buena/Moscone station in SoMa.
The Central Subway will help reduce crowding on the 30 Stockton, 8 Bayshore, and 45 Union/Stockton leading to Chinatown. It will greatly reduce travel times and ease congestion on Stockton Street, one more step toward reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
A consensus was reached to support the Central Subway as a Bay Area priority for future federal New Starts funding. In 2002 the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) approved the Central Subway Project for preliminary engineering.

Jan 5, 2023 · Four new stations were built along 1.7 miles through SoMa, Union Square, and Chinatown in order to bypass traffic congestion at 4th and Stockton Streets. After opening only for weekend service in November, the Central Subway fully opened for daily service on January 7th, 2023.
