  1. Map of Oxford Harry Potter Filming Locations. 1. The Staircase, Great Dining Hall, and Hallways. Tere are two Oxford Harry Potter filming locations that are emblematic of the movies. These are the Christ Church staircase and the Great Dining Hall – both of which you can see when you visit Christ Church college.

  2. The design for the Hogwarts Great Hall set in the films was based, as we have mentioned, on the dining hall at Christ Church, Oxford. The Hall is considered Christ Church’s finest surviving section of the original foundation of the College. With a Renaissance style, it gives you an excellent idea of the magnificent scale of the then-called ...

It may come as a surprise that this beautiful dining hall is actually just the regular canteen and dining space for students at Christ Church. Students can eat all three meals a day here if they wish. Most students will choose to dine in here every single evening as there aren’t actually any kitchens on-site at Christ Church. It’s also pretty darn ...

There are two dinners each evening – informal and formal ‘hall’. It’s not exactly a regular canteen as the food is brought to each student at the tables so there’s no queueing with a tray as you’d expect in an ordinary canteen. At least, that’s how it always was when I was there. Since leaving, I believe students now pick up their own dinner at inf...

Despite the extravagant setting, Christ Church Great Hall serves some of the worst food out of any Oxford college. To be fair, it’s also one of the cheapest dining halls at the university so I suppose you get what you pay for. Can you guess how much those three-course meals cost? Just £3.67 today! When I was there, the dining ticket cost £163.56, w...

Just like at Hogwarts, there is a long table stretching perpendicular to the long benches at the very top of the hall. This is where the professors and tutors eat and they even enter from a separate door to the side. In fact, the meal at formal hall cannot begin until the tutors have come in and are seated. They too will be wearing gowns but theirs...

Twice termly there are “guest dinners”, which were fancy black tie dinners to which each student could bring a guest. They cost £25 per person including wine and the food was exquisite. Those who eat at high table have a different chef to the rest of the students and this is the chef who prepares the guest dinner meals. These are honestly some of t...

At the start of every term, Oxford University students are made to sit “collections”, an informal exam to check that your brain hasn’t gone completely flaccid over the holidays. For students here, these are held in the Christ Church college dining hall. Oh, and you have to be wearing your gown. Yes, the gown again! It doesn’t matter what you’re wea...

    By Train

There are regular trains from all major UK stations to Oxford. If you are coming from London, you will need to go via London Paddington. Oxford station is a little way out of the city centre but you can then take a bus or walk into town. Book via the Trainline for the cheapest tickets.

    By Bus

If you’re planning to come by bus, aim to get off at either Oxford High Street or Gloucester Green bus station depending on your first Oxford destination. The Oxford Tube is a super convenient and cheap bus service that’ll take you from the centre of London straight into the heart of Oxford. If you’re taking this route, I’d recommend getting off at the High Street so that you can walk to Radcliffe Square in just 3 minutes.

    By Car

Oxford is easily accessible via the M4, M25, M40 and A roads.

    • Christ Church Hall. First up, Christ Church. Christ Church contains quite a few stops on the Harry Potter Oxford tour, so although you have to pay an entrance fee to get into the college, it covers more than one filming location.
    • Christ Church College – Bodley Staircase. Whenever we hunt out filming locations, one thing we always love seeing is how films and TV programmes use the same spaces for different purposes.
    • Christ Church College Cloisters. We told you there are a lot of Christ Church Oxford Harry Potter sites! This one is a little more tucked away than the others.
    • Bodleian Library – Divinity School. Next up on our Harry Potter tour of Oxford? The Bodleian Library’s gorgeous Divinity School. The Divinity School is another spot where Oxford University and Harry Potter meet.
    • New College cloisters and courtyard. We get our first look at New College during the build-up to the Triwizard Tournament. If you remember, Harry goes to seek out Cedric Diggory to warn him that the first task involves dragons!
    • The New College Tree. Another famous Oxford Harry Potter filming location is the great oak tree that sits in the middle of the New College cloister courtyard.
    • Divinity School at the Bodleian Library. The Divinity School was one of my favourite Oxford Harry Potter locations as the elaborate ceiling will take your breath away.
    • Duke Humphrey’s Library. One of the most popular libraries to study at in the Bodleian is Duke Humphrey’s library. It’s the oldest reading room in the building, dating back to 1447, that has many rare texts.
  3. Aug 1, 2023 · The Bodleian Library. First up on my list of Harry Potter filming locations in Oxford is the Bodleian Library. This is the main library at Oxford University and it is open to all students and all subjects. It is one of the largest libraries in the world, second only to the British Museum in London! Inside, there are many smaller libraries, none ...

  5. Aug 21, 2024 · 1. The Bodley Staircase. The most recognisable Harry Potter Christ Church filming location would be the fabulous Bodley Staircase with its detailed vaulted ceiling, glass windows and lamps. This is where the first-year students enter Hogwarts and meet Professor McGonagall.
