In 1931, at the time of The Great Depression, the branch of the Royal Mint in Ottawa was able to negotiate it’s separation from the Royal Mint, and the Canadian Royal Mint was officially formed. 44 years later, in 1976, demand both domestic and international for coinage from The Royal Canadian Mint had grown so much that the existing facility in Ottawa simply could not keep.

After many years of establishing new coinage and refining records, the Mint became a Crown corporation on April 1, 1969. Today the Royal Canadian Mint strikes coins for foreign countries as well as for Canada.
Description of Historic Place. The Royal Canadian Mint is a two-storey, Tudor-Revival style limestone building. The main part of the building was erected in 1905-1908, the refinery was attached to the rear of the office building in 1909-11. The Royal Canadian Mint is located on Sussex Drive, very close to other government buildings of the period.
