At Highway 405, Mulholland Drive becomes Mulholland Highway. The road stretches 21 miles, which takes about two hours. I recommend giving yourself at least three hours to be safe.

Mulholland Drive starts at Cahuenga Boulevard near the Ventura Freeway (aka the 101), close to Universal Studios Hollywood. As you drive into the hills, stop at the Hollywood Bowl Overlook. You can see down into the famed venue, and glance out over the city of Los Angeles. You might even be able to catch glimpses of the Hollywood sign.
5. Re: Advice Driving Mulholland Drive. Honestly, I don't think you meed to drive very much of Mulholland. If you drove from the 405 freeway (at the west) to the 101 Freeway (Caheunga Bl west) on the east, the drive would take 30 minutes (if there were no traffic and you didn't stop to take a look at any of the views).

The best way to take in Mulholland is between the 101 and the 405. Driving east from the 101 is better. There are plenty of places to stop and take in the views. Most of them are on the right. However, the first two are on the left. One overlooks the Hollywood Bowl. The other is the northern end of Runyon Canyon.

From up there, you can see the Los Angeles Basin, the San Fernando Valley, and even the Hollywood Sign. If you're going to stop up there, make sure to pull off to a safe area (but do not illegally park!).
