I think it is to any nurse’s benefit to get at least one year at the bedside, regardless of the specialty. Teaches you fundamental nursing skills, clinical judgment, and time management that you cannot attain anywhere else. I would highly discourage going straight into clinic or school nursing.

It's not that there aren't a few areas in hospital nursing that don't require lifting 50lbs or more, it's that I wouldn't bet the time and money of nursing school on breaking into them as a new grad. If you are willing and able to work in an office or an infusion center where your patients are walkie-talkies, then sure, that's possible.
