Penuel (or Pniel, Pnuel; Hebrew: פְּנוּאֵל Pənūʾēl) is a place described in the Hebrew Bible as being not far from Succoth, on the east of the Jordan River and south of the river Jabbok in present-day Jordan. Penuel is mentioned in the Book of Genesis as the site of Jacob's struggle with the angel.
Whether Penuel fell into ruin and was vacated at this time is not certain. But Jeroboam “built” Penuel according to 1 Kings 12:25. The site of Penuel is identified with Tell edh-Dhahab esh-Sherqiyeh on the Nahr ez-Zerqa, or the Biblical Jabbok. Some suggest that the Pernual of Pharaoh Shishak’s list of conquered cities is Penuel.
In regards to a location, Penuel and Peniel are synonymous references. Peniel is used only once and Penuel is used six times in the KJV Old Testament (Genesis 32:31, Judges 8:8 - 9, 17, 1Kings 12:25). The city is located east of the Jordan River and just north of the Jabbok River.

(Genesis 32:30) In (Genesis 32:31) and the other passages in which the name occurs, its form is changed to PENUEL. From the narrative it is evident that Peniel lay somewhere on the north bank of the Jabbok, and between that torrent and the fords of the Jordan at Succoth, a few miles north of the glen where the Jabbok falls into the Jordan.
