William Griffith was born in Ham Common, near Petersham, Surrey on 4 March 1810 and died of malaria in Malacca on 9 February 1845. He was the youngest son of Thomas Griffith, a London merchant, and a greatgrandson of Jeremiah Meyer, historical painter to George II and a founder of the Royal Academy.
