   Oct 9, 2020 · I was under the impression that Atari 800 games came in three forms: Cart Files - ROM/COM/XEX/CART. Disk Files - ATR/ATX. Tape Files - CAS. But then I stumbled upon some COM games that (according to AtariMania) were never released on cartridge: Air Support, Desmond's Dungeons, Encounter, Ghost Chaser, Zeppelin.

   Should I buy an Atari 800 XL or 400 Xe?

   • If you are just looking to use an Atari computer basically as a console,then the 800XL is the way to go, it has the minimum 64K to run all cartridges but a few 400/800 ones, and it has easy access to the cartridge port like Atari consoles. You'll be able to play all XL and XE cartridges and 99% of 400/800 cartridges.

   Can Atari 7800 play XEGS carts?

   • In the 80's the cart based - and at the time groundbreaking consoles that came out were: The 7800 can play 2600 and 5200 carts as is backwards compatible. So these are cart only consoles - no keyboards or plug in disk drives/cassette decks or peripherals available for them. None of the above can use the Atari 8-bit line/XEGS carts.

   Will a 2600 cart work on an 8-bit Atari?

   • As far as I know carts for 2600 console won't work in 8-bit Atari. Lots of listings are for untested games somebody found in a basement or attic. I doubt sellers will know what system those carts are compatible with. Basically 2600 and 7800 carts are completely different so won't work.

   • One way to tell is by the size. Atari computer cartridges are smaller than 2600 / 7800 and 5200 cartridges. The label might even say for which Atari systems they're intended for. Thanks! I am reading thru all the good info here on the forums.

   • Atariblast!: The 7800 can play 2600 and 5200 carts as is backwards compatible. Nope, It can't play 5200 games (I think there was a very very small run of an add on unit but it was basically a 5200 passed through the 7800 video circuit - mega rare and pretty niche)
