The ANTIC chip provided the Atari with enhanced graphics capabilities, allowing for smoother scrolling and more vibrant visuals, setting it apart from its competitor.
C64 was actually more popular then foreseen in the beginning. Atari lost all of it's prestige and breadbox had impressive video and audio capabilities for more than a reasonable price. Ability to knock 100USD of it's 595USD price by returning any Atari console or selected types of computers didn't hurt either.
Sep 30, 2013 · The Atari 800xl was a bit more expensive and there was less software for it. And since most buyers used their computer for games the C64 was more popular. But the hardware specs are pretty good compared to the C64. The build in basic programming language was pretty good compared to the C64 basic. The CPU speed (also a 6502 family) was the same.
