Provincial and territorial superior courts: These are courts of plenary, or complete, jurisdiction established under section 96 of the Constitution Act, 1867. They deal with more serious crimes and also hear appeals from provincial and territorial courts.
The trial-level courts hear civil and criminal cases. They may be called the Supreme Court, the Court of Queen's Bench, or the Superior Court of Justice. The appeal-level courts, or Courts of Appeal, hear civil and criminal appeals from the superior trial courts listed above.
Sep 1, 2021 · The Supreme Court of Canada is the final court of appeal. It only agrees to hear cases that are important across the country or that have to do with unsettled areas of law. If it does not agree to hear a case, the decision of the court of appeal stands.
The Supreme Court is a general court of appeal from all other Canadian courts of law. It, therefore, has jurisdiction over disputes in all areas of the law, including constitutional law, administrative law, criminal law and private law. In most cases, appeals are heard by the Court only if leave is first given.
The Court's Jurisdiction. The Supreme Court of Canada hears appeals from the decisions of the highest courts of final resort of the provinces and territories, as well as from the Federal Court of Appeal and the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada.

All cases come to it as appeals from lower courts; the principal exception being the reference procedure whereby the provincial Cabinet may refer constitutional questions to the Court of Appeal. Before hearing any case, the court must have jurisdiction to consider the appeal. The authority of appellate courts to review the decisions of lower courts varies widely from one jurisdiction to another. In some areas, the appellate court has limited powers of review.
