- Specifically, these studies indicate that (i) the human hippocampus and entorhinal cortex support map-like spatial codes, (ii) posterior brain regions such as parahippocampal and retrosplenial cortices provide critical inputs that allow cognitive maps to be anchored to fixed environmental landmarks, and (iii) hippocampal and entorhinal spatial codes are used in conjunction with frontal lobe mechanisms to plan routes during navigation.

Aug 1, 2006 · Theoretical studies suggested that a path integration system could involve cooperative interactions (attractor dynamics) among a population of place coding neurons, the synaptic coupling of which...

We suggest that cognitive maps can be constructed from general patterns of abstract relations that are separated from sensory representations and therefore generalize across different sensory environments.

Nov 11, 2021 · Brain circuits are thought to form a “cognitive map” to process and store statistical relationships in the environment. A cognitive map is commonly defined as a mental representation that describes environmental states (i.e., variables or events) and the relationship between these states.

Sep 2, 2021 · Single neurons in the primate hippocampus encode “paths” through a purely abstract value space similar to how place cells in rodents encode paths through physical space. Such cognitive maps provide a mechanism by which knowledge of relationships can guide decisions.

May 1, 2024 · How does the human brain construct cognitive maps for decision-making and inference? Here, we conduct an fMRI study on a navigation task in multidimensional abstract spaces.
Jul 17, 2024 · In this work, we build a normative place cell model wherein a neural network is tasked with accurate position reconstruction and path integration. Motivated by the notion of a cognitive map, the network’s position is estimated directly from its learned representations.
