Oct 25, 2022 · NPD: Categorical Versus Dimensional Diagnosis. Historically, NPD has been defined in the DSM, including the DSM-5, through a list of nine nomothetic criteria that capture grandiose narcissism. Fulfilling five out of nine criteria is a cutoff score for meeting inclusion criteria.
Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for adulation, and lack of empathy. Diagnosis is by clinical criteria. Treatment is with psychodynamic psychotherapy. (See also Overview of Personality Disorders.)
