Best Photo Locations in San Francisco Tip: You may have to get creative when photographing the painted ladies due to both the crowds and the San Francisco fog potentially obscuring the city backdrop. We had both to contend with when we visited.

- Lands End Coastal Trail. Lands End is a promontory that offers stunning views of the Golden Gate bridge as well as a walk called the Coastal Trail that winds and twists along the rugged cliffs of the San Francisco bay.
- Bernal Heights Hill. Bernal Heights Hill has a widely-known secret. If you look at it you’ll see a greenish-brown, somewhat stumpy-looking hill that rises rather unenthusiastically above the houses of the surrounding neighborhood.
- The Presidio. As the gateway to the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco’s 1,500-acre Presidio national park offers incredible views and an ideal spot to photograph both the bridge and the sprawling vistas which surround it.
- Muir Woods. In 1938 John Muir wrote, “Most people are on the world, not in it—have no conscious sympathy or relationship to anything about them—undiffused, separate, and rigidly alone like marbles of polished stone, touching but separate.”

- Get snappy with the Golden Gate Bridge at Fort Point. The Golden Gate Bridge is comparable in height to a 62-story building, which means at Fort Point, you stand at its base with this goliath towering high above you!
- Play overlooking Golden Gate at Crissy Field. Welcome to one of my favorite places in the Bay Area, Crissy Field, a 100-acre (c. 40 hectares) green space right on the water overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and close to Fisherman’s Wharf.
- Discover an easy photo op at Baker Beach. When you think of views of San Francisco Bay, Californian ocean shores, and that fabulous iconic red bridge in the background, you’re picturing this beach.
- Hug the coast at Lands End to get the best shot. The 3 acres (c. 1 hectare) bathhouses were opened in 1894 as the world’s largest indoor public pool facility.
- Baker’s Beach. I’ll start off with my favourite location in San Francisco for shooting the bridge, Baker’s Beach. You’ll have to park above the beach and walk down to it, but the view as the sun set across the water is just stunning.
- Battery Spencer and Vista Point. On the opposite side of the bay there are two easily accessible locations to shoot the bridge from – Battery Spencer and Vista Point.
- Bonita Point Lighthouse and Marin Headlands. Once you’ve visited Battery Spencer and realised the whole world is covered in a thick, impenetrable fog, don’t panic.
- Land’s End. Side note – Land’s End is my favourite place in San Francisco for a spot of walking. You can walk from the car park here all along the headland, with excellent views of the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate bridge.
Jul 16, 2024 · Baker Beach. A classic spot for a San Francisco beach photoshoot, both at sunrise and sunset. To the south, the Land’s End seacliffs create a stunning backdrop, and to the north is the Golden Gate Bridge. Within close proximity, you find sun-dappled forest, a historical military outpost, nearly a mile of beach, and beautiful rock formations.
