  2. To compensate, the Central School of Practical Nursing, the first such school in Ohio, was established as a 1-year training program. Later, practical nurses were trained to provide care for patients with stabilized conditions in a variety of health-care agencies under professional direction.

  3. The first class consisted of three students, but only one completed the program. Emma Lupher, who made her uniform, was awarded her nursing diploma on May 2, 1894, and is recognized as the first Aultman graduate. The school received approval from the state of Ohio on January 1, 1916, and was called the Aultman Hospital School of Nursing.
