  1. Sep 1, 2024 · The magical world of Harry Potter is filled with enchanting wonders, but it's also home to some of literature's most sinister villains. This list of the most evil Harry Potter villains includes everything from dark wizards to treacherous followers, with each character providing a stark contrast to...

    • Harry Potter. The protagonist of the story, who is gradually transformed from timid weakling to powerful hero by the end. Marked on the forehead with a lightning-shaped scar, Harry is marked also by the confrontation between good and bad magic that caused that scar: the standoff between the evil Voldemort and his parents who died to save their son.
    • Hermione Granger. Initially an annoying goody-two-shoes who studies too much and obeys the school rules too zealously. Hermione eventually becomes friendly with Harry after she learns to value friendship over perfectionism and obedience.
    • Ron Weasley. A shy, modest boy who comes from an impoverished wizard family. Ron is Harry’s first friend at Hogwarts, and they become close. He lacks Harry’s gusto and charisma, but his loyalty and help are useful to Harry throughout their adventures.
    • Hagrid. An oafish giant who works as a groundskeeper at Hogwarts. Rubeus Hagrid is a well-meaning creature with more kindness than brains. He cares deeply for Harry, as evidenced by the tears he sheds upon having to leave the infant Harry with the Dursleys.
    • Voldemort. Just as Harry Potter is now counted among popular culture's best "chosen one" heroes alongside the likes of Luke Skywalker and Frodo Baggins, Voldemort will forever be mentioned along with pop culture's most notorious villains.
    • Gellert Grindelwald. The "Harry Potter" saga has been seen as an allegory about the fight against injustice since it hit bookshelves back in 1997. Many fans have picked up on what seem like clear parallels between the rise of bigotry-based authoritarianism in our own world history (particularly, the events of World War II and the Holocaust) and in the Wizarding World.
    • Bellatrix Lestrange. "Harry Potter" fans are told of the evil exploits of two dark, magical, would-be dictators throughout the books, movies, and plays that cover the story in its entirety.
    • Peter Pettigrew. Audiences first meet Ron's pet rat Scabbers in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." But then "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" contains the surprise revelation that the scraggly rodent who's prone to biting his master is none other than Peter Pettigrew, the one-time member of the Marauders (along with James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Sirius Black).
    • Severus Snape
    • The Dursleys
    • Aunt Marge
    • Narcissa Malfoy
    • Draco Malfoy
    • Quirrell
    • Lucius Malfoy
    • Aragog
    • Nagini
    • Gellert Grindelwald

Though we all spent the first six books angry at Snape, he turned out to be on the good side in the end, even if he was prejudiced in his youth. Snape proves that someone you thought was a villain all along might actually be a hero.

Though the Dursleys were awful to Harry, at least they weren't Death Eaters. In fact, Dudley turned out all right in the end (he doesn't think Harry's a "waste of space," after all), and Petunia was sympathetic because she wanted what we all want: to go to Hogwarts. Vernon, on the other hand... yeah, Vernon wasn't too great.

Once again... at least she wasn't a Death Eater. Still, Aunt Marge was pretty awful — I can't let those horrible insults about Harry's father slide — but she did get her comeuppance in the end.

Though Narcissa supported her husband, who was a Death Eater, she never actually became one. And in the end, when her son's life was in danger, she protected him by lying to Voldemort. That takes guts, and it ultimately helped Harry defeat he-who-must-not-be-named — so Narcissa wins least evil Malfoy family member.

He was annoying from the beginning, when he bashed the Weasleys and went on and on about blood purity, and eventually became downright evil when he joined Voldemort's side. Still, evil never came naturally for Draco, and it always seemed that he was in way over his head. Though a lot of us secretly wished he would be the resident Bad Boy with a Hea...

Poor Quirrell was easily manipulated, and had pretty much no backbone. He completely submitted to Lord Voldemort, letting him live in the back of his head (?), and then became yet another disposable follower of the dark lord. The only good thing about Quirrell? His AVPM counterpart. *listens to "Different As Can Be on repeat*

Lucius is responsible for giving Ginny Tom Riddle's Diary, and it all goes downhill from there. He's cold, cruel, and constantly ridicules the Weasleys and Dobby, who are the best so that's a major strike against him. Though he's an extremely prejudiced Death Eater, he eventually throws it away to try and save his son, so he at least has some redee...

Aragog is an enormous spider: strike one. He got Hagrid expelled from Hogwarts: strike two. Then he tried to feed Harry and Ron to his children. Strike three — he's out — I'm gonna go follow the butterflies now.

Oh yay, another creepy creature who eats humans. And this one's a snake. Voldemort's pet is pretty evil, as she eats a ton of his victims (and bites Arthur Weasley), but when Neville kills her, it's pretty epic. So at least there's that.

The only reason Grindelwald isn't higher on the list is that we don't know a ton about him (prequel please...). However, we do know that he was basically another Voldemort, betrayed the noble Albus Dumbledore, and used the phrase "for the greater good" to justify a lot of terrible actions. So we know he was pretty awful.

    • DOLORES UMBRIDGE. Finally, we come to the one Harry Potter character we truly despise the most (and one author J.K. Rowling probably had the most fun creating because she could just go there).
    • LAVENDER BROWN. Oh boy, is Lavender Brown one grating individual. She is the epitome of the needy and clingy girlfriend, and poor Ron gets stuck with her because he really doesn't know any better (he will know better soon enough, though).
    • GILDEROY LOCKHART. Talk about being self-centered, Gilderoy Lockhart takes the cake. Gaining celebrity status in the wizarding world for writing books about his many encounters with dark creatures, Lockhart loves to shine in the spotlight.
    • PETER PETTIGREW. Peter Pettigrew quite fittingly suits his Animagnus form; he is an ugly rat for betraying his Hogwarts BFFs James and Lily Potter and for framing Sirius Black for the deed, along with his own faked murder and for the 12 Muggles Peter killed during his escape.
  2. Nov 28, 2021 · If Deathly Hallows was the finale to Harry's conflict with Voldemort, Half-Blood Prince brought the arc between Harry and Draco to a climax with a violent clash in a Hogwarts bathroom. Afflicted ...

  4. Mar 15, 2021 · Broadly speaking, the story of the Harry Potter franchise focuses on the feud between good and evil, as represented by the ongoing battle between Harry and Voldemort. For every morally upright witch or wizard, there are those in the Harry Potter universe who are unquestionably evil. Voldemort leads an entire army of Death Eaters, after all.
