McCormick Ranch grew from pasture lands where cattle and horses roamed to a 7-square-mile “city within a city.”. Scottsdale Historian Joan Fudala described Fowler and Anne McCormick as some of the most famous people in the city at the time.
Fowler McCormick, 20 years Anne’s junior, died in 1973. The 4,236-acre ranch had been sold in 1970 to Kaiser-Aetna (K-A) for $12.1 million. The McCormicks were extremely civic-minded and generous with their wealth and left one-half of their estate to more than 100 different charitable and educational institutions and museums around the nation.
The McCormicks were pioneers in introducing irrigation techniques that turned arid land into fertile grounds for agriculture and later, residential development. The vision for McCormick Ranch was bold: to create a balanced mix of homes, parks, and businesses while preserving the natural beauty intrinsic to the area.
