His work explores the history of Britain and its empire in the modern period, and the interplay of national, transnational, and global histories. He grew up in Colchester, England, and read Modern History at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. He lived in Tokushima, Japan, before returning to Oxford to complete his doctoral studies.
Very few students who grew up in British minority ethnic families studied at Magdalen in the early twentieth century. Two exceptions came from the same family. Albert and Cecil Hourani were the sons of Lebanese immigrants to Manchester, where their father was a prosperous textiles merchant.
Bio. Aravind Adiga was born in 1974 in Madras (now called Chennai), and grew up in Mangalore in the south of India. He was educated at Columbia University in New York and Magdalen College, Oxford. His articles have appeared in publications such as the New Yorker, the Sunday Times, the Financial Times, and the Times of India.
Ms. Becker grew up on a family farm in Martinsburg, Missouri, and was valedictorian of her country high school. She graduated from the University of Missouri in 1978 with a bachelor’s in journalism and a bachelor’s in arts with a major in political science. She was recognized as an outstanding alumnus by the University of Missouri in 2017.
