Gandalf is a protagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien 's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He is a wizard, one of the Istari order, and the leader of the Company of the Ring. Tolkien took the name "Gandalf" from the Old Norse "Catalogue of Dwarves" (Dvergatal) in the Völuspá.
A powerful wizard, Gandalf generally prefers to keep his powers and motives closely guarded. He never reveals, for instance, why he chooses to help Thorin in his quest; he certainly has no interest in the treasure, and he leaves the company in Mirkwood while he goes to fight against the Necromancer.

- Arrival in Middle-earth. During the Third Age, while Sauron's 'dark spirit of malice' was increasing over Middle-earth, the Valar chose the Istari, missionaries from among the Maiar, to go to Middle-earth and help the peoples.
- Early vigilance. Around T.A. 1100, the Istari and the Eldar discovered that some evil entity resided at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. Dark shapes moved in the forest and evil began to multiply in the woods.
- Quest for Erebor. Gandalf would visit the Shire occasionally and participate in the Midsummer-eve parties of the Old Took where he impressed young Hobbits with his fireworks, and his stories about Dragons, Goblins and princesses.
- Return of the Shadow. Despite the Council's hopes, Sauron was not weakened by this attack. He had foreseen the move that drove him from Mirkwood, and his retreat was but a feint.
Gandalf's most important role in The Hobbit is as a tutelary or wisdom figure to Bilbo. He persuades Bilbo to go on the adventurous journey with the dwarves because he knows that Bilbo, without realizing it, is an essential player in the drama that will result in the death of Smaug.
Oct 13, 2023 · Gandalf during The Lord of the Rings movies. After his adventure with Bilbo, Gandalf took a great interest in the Baggins family and the Shire. In fact, his Hobbit fixation was also noted by Saruman, who started sending agents to Bree and the Southfarthing to monitor the wizard.
Gandalf felt that a Hobbit should be involved, and he remembered Bilbo Baggins and decided to pay him a visit with Thorin. Though he missed Bilbo, who had traveled to Rivendell to visit the Elves for the Elven New Year, he became confident that Bilbo was fit for the job.
Gandalf had a feeling a Hobbit should be involved in the mission, or it would fail, and selected Bilbo Baggins to become Thorin's burglar. Gandalf travelled with Thorin and Company to the border of Mirkwood.
