John Rice Jones, a pioneering jurist renowned for his erudition, was one of the principal framers of Missouri’s 1820 constitution and a member of the state’s first supreme court. He was born in Wales on February 10, 1759, attended Oxford University, and practiced law in London before immigrating to the United States in 1784.

Born in Sharpsburg, Kentucky, John Carleton Jones first came to the University of Missouri in 1883 as an associate professor of Latin and Greek and was appointed as the first dean of the College of Arts and Science three years later. Jones was asked by the University to step into the position of acting president on two occasions.
