- Iain De Caestecker as Arthur. You may know the classic King Arthur stories like the sword in the stone, the lady in the lake and the knights of the round table in Camelot, but cast those from your mind for this adaptation.
- Jordan Alexandra as Guinevere. In The Winter King as in Arthurian tales, Guinever is Arthur's wife. In tales she's depicted in a vast range of ways, sometimes evil and sometimes noble, but this new TV show comes down somewhere between the two.
- Eddie Marsan as Uther Pendragon. Uther Pendragon is Arthur's father, both in The Winter King and by all historical accounts in the real world too. In legend he's tricked into sleeping with his enemy's wife to conceive Arthur.
- Nathanial Martello-White as Merlin. The historical figure of Merlin needs no introduction, with the iconic wizard synonymous with wizards around the world, but how will The Winter King handle this creature since it's historical?

Arthur Pendragon is the main protagonist of the MGM+ series The Winter King. He is portrayed by Ian De Caestecker.
Young Arthur begins as an exiled bastard before becoming the greatest hope for Britain.
Arthur fights alongside the Dumnonia army against the Saxons. The fleet is ambushed at White Horse Plain and Arthur's half-brother, Prince Mordred and King Uther's only legitimate heir to the throne, is killed. Uther blames Arthur, who angers him further when Arthur offers himself as a successor to the throne. Uther beats him bloody and is about to kill him when Merlin intervenes, suggesting he banish the bastard son. Uther exiles him from all of Britain, and Arthur gives his friend Owain partying advice on how to defeat the Saxons. He is then dragged to the Caer Cadarn border and left to ride bruised and beaten out of the capital. He comes across a fishers settlement and discovers a survivor of the death pit. He rescues the boy and takes him to Avalon. Arthur leaves the boy in the care of Merlin and Nimue before following his King's orders of exile.
Eight years later, King Uther sires a new heir, a boy named Mordred. Merlin has a vision of the child; he has an evil inside him that will grow with every passing year, and will slaughter his own people to bring Britain to its knees. He councils a dying Uther to let Arthur come home, but the King refuses. Merlin decides to retrieve Arthur himself. He finds Arthur in Gaul, the land of King Ban. Arthur is a Lord there. He has proven himself a great warrior and fighter, never having lost a battle. He is bathing in a waterfall when Merlin arrives and they embrace. Merlin has come to take him home to save the isle.
Arthur already knows of Uther's ailing condition and the birth of a new heir, but doesn't wish to return. He sees Uther's banishment as a freedom. He belongs to no family, no country, no religion, and has found a new path. He's thankful for Merlin but refuses to return to Dumnonia.
Back in Avalon, King Gundleus betrays the crown and ravages Avalon, killing everyone he can. He chases the survivors, which include Morgan, Mordred, Derfel, and Nimue, into the woods. They are rescued by Arthur and his army, waiting on the hills above.
