    • Harry Potter. The hero and protagonist, Harry is a twelve-year-old boy with messy hair and glasses who became famous within the wizard community by surviving the curse of a powerful wizard.
    • Ron Weasley. Ron is tall, red-haired, and from a respected but poor family. Ron is one of Harry's two best friends at Hogwarts. He is loyal to Harry, and belligerent to their enemy, Malfoy.
    • Hermione Granger. Hermione is always the top student in her class. She is clever and well-read. Most spells come easily to her and remain in her encyclopedic mind.
    • Voldemort. Once a student named Tom Riddle who attended Hogwarts fifty years before Harry, Voldemort became the most powerful dark wizard ever. When Harry was a baby, Voldemort killed Harry's parents and tried to kill Harry, only to have his curse backfire and render him powerless.
    • The Warrior/Hero (Also The Orphan): Harry Potter. In a typical Hero/Shadow pairing, the Hero faces seemingly insurmountable odds because the Shadow is better equipped and just as motivated.
    • The Jester/Trickster: Fred And George Weasley. The entirety of the Weasely family becomes embroiled in the fight against Voldemort early in the series. In reality, all of them could be considered Allies - those who help the Hero in their quest - but Ron's older twin brothers play another role during the stories set at Hogwarts as well.
    • The Friendly Beast: Hedwig. Fans could probably argue that there are numerous species outside of wizards that Harry meets on his journey who could fill this role.
    • The Ruler: Cornelius Fudge. The role of The Ruler is exactly what the name implies: an authority figure that holds sway over other characters. The Ruler can be either a help or a hindrance to the Hero on their journey, but they often find themselves out of touch with the reality of their situation.
    • Harry Potter. The protagonist of the story, who is gradually transformed from timid weakling to powerful hero by the end. Marked on the forehead with a lightning-shaped scar, Harry is marked also by the confrontation between good and bad magic that caused that scar: the standoff between the evil Voldemort and his parents who died to save their son.
    • Hermione Granger. Initially an annoying goody-two-shoes who studies too much and obeys the school rules too zealously. Hermione eventually becomes friendly with Harry after she learns to value friendship over perfectionism and obedience.
    • Ron Weasley. A shy, modest boy who comes from an impoverished wizard family. Ron is Harry’s first friend at Hogwarts, and they become close. He lacks Harry’s gusto and charisma, but his loyalty and help are useful to Harry throughout their adventures.
    • Hagrid. An oafish giant who works as a groundskeeper at Hogwarts. Rubeus Hagrid is a well-meaning creature with more kindness than brains. He cares deeply for Harry, as evidenced by the tears he sheds upon having to leave the infant Harry with the Dursleys.
