Feb 24, 2009 · During its 14-year voyage, the Galileo space probe (and its detachable mini-probe) visited Venus, Earth, the asteroid Gaspra, observed the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter, Jupiter, Europa, Callisto, Io, and Amalthea. In order to avoid the possible contamination of one of Jupiter's moons, the Galileo space probe was purposely crashed ...

NASA/JPL-Caltech. NASA's Galileo spacecraft was designed to study the large, gaseous planet Jupiter, its moons and its surrounding magnetosphere, which is a magnetic bubble surrounding the planet. The craft was named for the Italian Renaissance scientist who discovered Jupiter's major moons in 1610.
Oct 18, 1989 · And its flight past Venus in 1990 yielded fascinating infrared images of the planet's clouds. After discoveries including evidence for the existence of a saltwater ocean beneath the Jovian moon Europa's icy surface, extensive volcanic processes on the moon Io and a magnetic field generated by the moon Ganymede, Galileo plunged into Jupiter's atmosphere on September 21, 2003 to prevent an ...
There have been 46 space missions to the planet Venus (including gravity-assist flybys). Missions to Venus constitute part of the exploration of Venus. The Soviet Union, followed by the United States, have soft landed probes on the surface. Venera 7 was the first lander overall and first for the Soviet Union, touching down on 15 December 1970.

Launched on Oct. 18, 1989, from Space Shuttle Atlantis, the spacecraft orbited Jupiter for almost eight years, and made close passes by all the planet's major moons. Galileo even carried a small probe that it deployed and sent deep into the atmosphere of Jupiter.
Venus in real colors, processed from clear and blue filtered Mariner 10 images. Observations of the planet Venus include those in antiquity, telescopic observations, and from visiting spacecraft. Spacecraft have performed various flybys, orbits, and landings on Venus, including balloon probes that floated in the atmosphere of Venus.

Nov 4, 2024 · Several Soviet and U.S. robotic spacecraft have landed on Venus and the Moon, and the United States has landed spacecraft on the surface of Mars. A long-term detailed surveillance of Jupiter and its moons began in 1995 when the U.S. Galileo spacecraft took up orbit around the planet, at the same time releasing a probe into the turbulent Jovian atmosphere.
