History. The indigenous Lenape people named the area "Wallenpaupack" which means "The Stream of Swift and Slow Water." William Penn later owned the land and then deeded it to his son Thomas Penn.
Lake Wallenpaupack is a 5,700 acre lake located in Pike and Wayne counties that is owned and operated by Brookfield Renewable. The lake is around 13 miles in length and about 60 feet at its maximum depth.
From its completion until June 2015, PPL Corporation owned and managed the lake. After merging with Stone Energy Holdings to form Talen Energy, the lake was sold to Brookfield Renewable Partners, LLC. Brookfield now owns Lake Wallenpaupack, maintaining its hydroelectric generation facilities and administering the Shoreline Management Policy.
HISTORY. The creation of Lake Wallenpaupack in 1926 meant a new way of life for many in the area. When the lake swallowed up part of George and Rachel Singer’s farm, they decided to transform their property to welcome the wave of tourists they were confident would follow.
In 1935, Harvey Couch, founder of the Arkansas Power and Light Company, donated 2,000 acres along the lake for the creation of Lake Catherine State Park. The park’s namesake lake, located south of Hot Springs, was formed by Remmel Dam, the state’s first major hydroelectric project.
