“Everything I thought I knew about my mom, my dad is a crazy riddle that can only be solved by finding this treasure.”

    ―Jess

Jess is a brilliant and resourceful minded young woman living in Baton Rogue. She loves a good mystery, and has a natural talent for solving puzzles. Her dream is to work for the FBI, but her life has come to a standstill following her mother's passing. One day, her life is turned upside down when former FBI agent Peter Sadusky inspires her to embark on a crazy adventure that will uncover the truth about her family's past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.

Upon discovering her family has something to do with Pan-American treasure, she decides to go on this treasure hunt, despite all the adversity and fear, and she rises to the occasion.

Jess was born in Mexico to Rafael Rios and Manuela Valenzuela. Her father was part of a secret network of treasure protectors that dated back centuries. When someone named Salazar threatened to harm his family for the whereabouts of a lost treasure, Rafael sent Jess (who was a baby) and her mother away for their own safety. Rafael stayed behind to hold off two men sent by Salazar, and was never seen again. Jess and her mother escaped to the United States, where her mother would continue to raise her alone. She was also brought up to resent her father, as she did not want Jess to grow up like him.

In twenty-one years, Jess grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She became a scholarship student at Oak Prep, and was the first DACA recipient to graduate valedictorian. She had the option to go to any prestigious college. Her dream was to become an FBI agent. But her life came to a standstill when her mother got sick with cancer. So, she gave up university to take care of her until she died. She was left with stacks of medical bills and a job she hated (working as a storage worker). One day, she is sent to meet with former FBI agent, Peter Sadusky to hand in some stuff from a storage until he was renting out, as well inform him his rent was overdue. When Mr. Sadusky notices her necklace (originally her father's) he tells her things about her father she never knew from her mother. He tells Jess the necklace around her neck represents an ancient oath to unbury the lost history of entire civilizations. Her father wore this necklace because he was a treasure protector, and now that honor has been passed on to her. Mr. Sadusky gives Jess a letter which holds a clue to a treasure of upmost importance.

Jess at first chooses to forget the whole thing, especially since Mr. Sadusky was suffering from dementia and everything he had been saying could have been a load of nonsense. However, strange events start to happen around her, Some suspicious people, claiming to be the FBI, come nosing around Mr. Sadusky's storage unit, she learns that Mr. Sadusky had suddenly passed after just a day after meeting him, and finds her apartment ransacked. Jess's curiosity gets the better of her, and she opens the letter she was given. Inside it is just photo Mr. Sadusky with his family. However, she notices something about the photo and realizes its a clue that leads her to a strange cube (which has the same sun symbol that is on her necklace) hidden inside a secret compartment in Sadusky's Masonic Lodge.

Jess soon draws the attention of a ruthless black-market antiquities dealer named Billie Pearce, who wants the cube and holds her friend Oren for ransom. Before handing the cube over, Jess tries to figure out the mystery of the cube, which turns out to be a puzzle box. The markings around the sun symbol are dials which do not move unless the box is pointed due North. Jess is able to figure out the combination, which detaches all sides of the box, revealing on the inside sections of a map that do not match up. Jess and her friend Tasha take pictures of the pieces for handing the box over to Billie in exchange for Oren, who is released unharmed.

•Jess's surname was originally going to be "Morales".
