I prefer watching french shows/movies with the french subtitles and just following along that way. I would personally advise you to watch in french with english subtitles first, to understand what's going on, then come back later to watch again with french subtitles. You can also watch a show in english with french subtitles for some practice.
- Call my agent / Dix pour cent (2015) Probably one of the best French shows from the last few years. You will see some of the most famous French actors playing their own roles like Jean Dujardin, Giles Lelouche, or Audrey Fleurot.
- Lupin / Lupin : dans l’ombre d’Arsène (2021) A new French series produced by Netflix starring the famous French actor Omar Sy. This is a modern version of the famous French character Arsène Lupin the Gentleman burglar.
- Family Business (2019) Maybe the first French series on Netflix and produced by Netflix that is good, not like the French show Marseille. You will find the rising French actor Jonathan Cohen playing the main character, the actresses Julia Piation, Liliane Rovère (Playing in Call my agent too), and the famous Gérard Darmon.
- Vermin (2018) This French series is a cartoon that for once is excellent. This series might be not for a young audience. It was produced by the studio Blackpills and the creators of the crazy French cartoon “Les Kassos” (You can find it on YouTube).
- Catherine Rickman
- Escort Boys. A show about French cowboys doing sex work to save the bees might sound like an odd concept, but in the case of Escort Boys, it’s just crazy enough to work.
- Represent (En Place) Fans of Parks and Rec and VEEP will devour this hilarious comedy about a youth center leader in the impoverished banlieues of Paris who accidentally ends up campaigning to be the next president of France.
- The Forest (Le Forêt) In the tiny French village of Montfaucon where The Forest takes place, nothing is as it appears. This mini-series follows the hunt for a missing 16-year-old girl that leads to shocking revelations within a close-knit community where everyone has their secrets.
- Lupin. It’s hard to talk about French TV without mentioning Lupin, likely the most-watched French TV show globally. Based on the Arsène Lupin books by Maurice Le Blanc (contemporaneous with, and just as popular in France, as Sherlock Holmes), this is the show that put French TV on the map in the U.S. It stars the inimitable Omar Sy (Les Intouchables) in the role of Assane Diop, a “gentleman burglar,” whose glamorous heists provide a window into both the highs and lows of Parisian society.
For TV shows, I'd recommend Les Revenants (creepy mystery) and Le Bureau des Légendes (spy agency). For movies, someone already mentioned Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles (which is a historical piece set during WWI), Le Grand Bain (a mix of comedy and drama), Au Revoir Là-haut, Persépolis (an

Of course, I can’t go around mentioning the “Famous 4”. This is probably your best choice if you live outside of France. Unfortunately, not all movie trailers you will find on YouTube, Wikipedia or allocine.fr (see below) will be available for you to watch on Amazon, Netflix & Co. I’ve especially found that most French movies available on Netflix a...
Apart from Arte.tv, it seems that most (if not all) of the following Online French TV Channels are only available for people residing in the EU. But do give it a try anyway – it’s worth it!
Arte.tv is a fabulous FREE French-German TV channel that has since expanded its languages to English, Spanish and a few more. You can find many interesting documentaries, reports and movies on that site. I recently started watching French movies on www.canalplus.com(a popular French cable TV channel) as they have a huge selection of French movies available to watch. Unfortunately, it seems to only be available for EU residents (but I know the sneaky ones among you might find a way around it. ;)) Registering is absolutely free. Once you’re registere...
TF1 is the main French TV channel. On MyTF1, you can find many replays, watch live shows and popular TV series.
France.tv has many interesting TV reports, documentaries, series, etc. It’s the hub of other very popular French TV channels: France 2, France 3, France 4 and France 5 (super original channel names, I know, but hey, at least they’ll stick!)
6play is M6’s Channel Hub. M6 typically broadcasts entertainment shows, so if that’s something you enjoy, browse around!
Here are a few popular French on-demand streaming sites. If you live outside the EU, I can’t guarantee that you will be able to register and access their catalogue (unless you’re using a VPN service…sneak.) Please be aware that I haven’t used any of these services myself, so I can’t make any guarantees. I just tried to pick the ones that seemed ser...
OCS offers a 7-day trial and then costs 9,99€ / month. It has a large selection of international movies.
Tënk’s on-demand platform is a litle more unique, since it focuses exclusively on hand-picked documentaries, some being even older than 1960. Tënk’s plan starts at 1€ for the first month and then costs 60€ / year or 33€ / 6 months.
