Edgar Hetteen, the Roseau, Minn., native known as the grandfather of the snowmobile industry for co-founding the two main manufacturers still making them in northwest Minnesota, died Saturday in a Grand Rapids, Minn., nursing home.

It is with great sadness that we relay word of the passing of the legendary Edgar Hetteen, one of the co-founders of Polaris and such a long-time driving force in the snowmobile industry that he is commonly called "The Godfather of Snowmobiling." Edgar died on Saturday, Feb. 12. He was 90.

Even though Edgar gets credit for being the “Father of the Snowmobile” it was actually created by David Johnson and a few employees of Hetteen Hoist.

The snowmobile invention would have to wait another 10 years, against Hetteen’s will at first.
