Born June 10, 1887, in Martinsburg, West Virginia,3 Harry Flood Byrd was a direct descendant of the William Byrds of colonial Vir- ginia fame. His father, Richard E. Byrd, had served as the commonwealth's attorney for Frederick County, speaker of the House of Delegates, and United States district attorney for the western district of Virginia.
