General Orson Minott Oviatt (1799 – 1869) was a wealthy merchant, abolitionist, politician and military officer from Richfield, Ohio. He was the city postmaster for many years, county commissioner, and the cofounder the Academic Institution of Richfield.
As one of the first officials of the township, Isaac Welton acted as a supervisor and he was the first Justice of the Peace in Richfield. He was also the first master of the Meridian Sun Lodge in 1823.

Richfield Township was founded in 1809 and originally was twenty-five (25) square miles in size. The Village of Richfield separated from Richfield Township in 2003 and with some land area lost through annexation. This left Richfield Township with its current area of 16.35 square miles.
