Late post, but I'd like to contribute. I'm reading my first book in Spanish right now called "Cajas de Cartón". IMO it's a perfect first book to read in Spanish for two chief reasons: A) It's not a translation. It's a memoir from a Mexican and is an actual piece of Spanish language literature.
