Oct 10, 2017 · The purpose of adaptation. Darwinism is a theory of the process of adaptation, i.e. the appearance of design in the biological world. The problem of how to explain adaptation is an ancient one, and it famously provided the basis for William Paley's [1] argument for the existence of an intelligent, divine designer.

May 15, 2022 · Second, he proposed a mechanism - natural selection - to explain how evolution takes place. Evolution involves two interrelated phenomena: adaptation and speciation. In adaptation, over the course of time, species modify their phenotypes in ways that permit them to succeed in their environment. In speciation, over the course of time, the number ...
Oct 19, 2023 · Vocabulary. In evolutionary theory, adaptation is the biological mechanism by which organisms adjust to new environments or to changes in their current environment. Although scientists discussed adaptation prior to the 1800s, it was not until then that Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace developed the theory of natural selection.
Abstract. Ever since Darwin, the role of natural selection in shaping the morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations of animals and plants across generations has been central to understanding life and its diversity. New discoveries have shown with increasing precision how genetic, molecular, and biochemical processes produce and ...
Jun 22, 2017 · The biological explanation of the origin of adaptation replaces the idea of a Designer, and is central to post-Darwinian evolutionary biology. ‘Adaptation and natural selection’ describes the modern theory of adaptation and its biological causes and basis. This is based on the theory of natural selection. Adaptations are recognizable in ...

Oct 15, 2009 · The Origin of a Concept. The word exaptation was first proposed by Stephen Gould and Elisabeth Vrba (1982), but the idea itself is an old one dating back to the origins of evolutionary theory. Gould and Vrba point out that Darwin described examples of the concept in On the Origin of Species (1859).
