Dec 29, 2017 · Gen 35:9 God appeared again to Jacob on his arrival from Paddan-aram, and He blessed him. 35:10 God said to him, “You whose name is Jacob, you shall be called Jacob no more, but Israel shall be your name.” Thus He named him Israel.
Jacob is very special in Islam for carrying on the legacy left by his forefathers. Muslims believe God bestowed His utmost grace upon Jacob and chose him to be among the most exalted men. The Quran frequently mentions Jacob as a man of might and vision and stresses he was of the company of the good and elect. As the Quran says:
One of the things that makes this question even more complicated is that after God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, He still sometimes referred to Jacob as Jacob and Israel as the nation of Israel. Yet, at other times, He was referring to Israel, meaning the person Jacob, whose new name was Israel.
The Jews God was addressing at the time of the revelation of the Quran, were not there (alive) when, on his death bed, Jacob asked his sons what they would worship after he was gone. They answered that they would worship God—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Ishmael.
Dec 4, 2011 · Traditional texts sometimes identify us Jews as b’nei ya’akov, the children of Jacob, but the name that the Torah and we ourselves use much more often is b’nai yisra’el, the children of Israel. Jacob becomes Israel, however, only after he wrestles with the angel.
In response, God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, meaning ‘let God prevail.’. God then promised Israel that all the blessings that had been pronounced upon Abraham’s head would also be his” (Russell M. Nelson, “ Let God Prevail,” Oct. 2020 general conference [Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2020, 92]).
Rather than giving him a blessing, though, the man asks Jacob his name, and then he gives Jacob a new name (Genesis 32:29 “He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and you prevailed.”
