Jan 6, 2022 · It was that important—worthy of all-night prayer. Application. Leadership matters. Leaders matter. Ministries rise and fall based on leadership. That’s why Jesus took all night to pray—He was choosing the leaders for His movement. Paul told us not to be hasty or quick in appointing someone as an elder or pastor (1 Timothy 5:22).
- To overcome temptation: We have to understand that while Jesus was in the flesh, he was susceptible to yielding to temptations. The temptations that came his way were as real as the ones that do come our way.
- To set an example for us: The person who said, “Men ought always to pray,” lived by it. He came to show us the best way to live. Among other reasons why Jesus prayed, he prayed to show us an example of how seriously we should take prayer.
- To carry out the will of the Father: Jesus didn’t come to do his own will. He came to live according to what was written about him. Death on the cross was never an easy task for him to carry out.
- To communicate with the Father: Being in the flesh, prayer was the only means Jesus had to communicate with his heavenly Father. Jesus, knowing that effective and frequent communication is what keeps every relationship lively, never skipped praying.
Luke 6:12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. The time element in prayer is of vast importance. By the use of modern machinery a man can do more in a minute than he once could do in hours; indeed, some high-speed computers can do more calculations in a few minutes than a man could do in a lifetime.
But no; it was not for enjoyment alone that Jesus prayed all night. His prayers were poured into the deep heart of God as easily as the water pours over the rock into the chasm below. His heart unfolded to His Father as gently as a flower is kissed open by the breeze of a summer-dawn.
