When Minato sealed half of the Kyuubi into himself with the Reaper Death Seal, they fought in the stomach of the Shinigami. He beat his half of the Kyuubi and thus gained KCM (whether he knew it or not because he was dead). Once he got Edo Tensei'd, he could use it freely.
