If you make contact with the ball with any part of your body, the ball is automatically "set up" for your partner. Except on the third hit, in which case the ball is hit softly over the net. Pressing the button lets you "spike" the ball, resulting in a low, hard hit. It's impossible to hit the ball into the net but it can sail out of bounds.
