This disruption to nurses’ circadian rhythms impacts performance, and nurses working at night have more work-related injuries and a significantly increased risk of drowsy driving incidents after working a night shift. 12, 20, 21, 22 Sleep-related errors have been identified for night shift workers, and research has found that night-shift ...
Results: We found that night shift nurses had significantly greater lane deviation during the post-shift drive home compared to day shift nurses, which is a key indicator of collision risk, demonstrating impaired driving safety.
Rotating 12-h shifts (day-night) is associated with fewer sleep disturbances in nurses than 8-h shifts (Costa et al., 2014). However, longer working hours may increase fatigue symptoms and the need for adequate rest (McDowall et al., 2017 ).
Even though fatigue can be due to a variety of causes (e.g., illness, a vigorous workout, or a period of prolonged concentration), this chapter will focus on the effects of fatigue associated with insufficient sleep (see Key Terms and Definitions).

Dec 1, 2020 · Drowsy driving following the night shift is persistent among nurses resulting in elevated rates of vehicle crashes and crash-related injuries and deaths. While considerable effort has been dedicated to the development of countermeasures, implementation of these countermeasures in nursing has lagged behind other shift work oriented industries.
