Answered. Two things I'm confused about: Do the audiences all really understand French/Italian/German/etc? The style of singing seems really difficult to understand and pick out individual words (even when sung in English).
Opera is the most outsized and unrealistic of these forms (excepting plays in the genre of surrealism, I guess, and musicals like Cabaret with the weird nightclub-interludes and whatnot), and so there's some appeal in that. Just witnessing something so completely outsized.
