  1. May 1, 2011 · Because soils with and without ortstein often occur on the same landforms, soils containing >5% ortstein (89 series) were compared with geographically associated and competing soil series (59) that lack ortstein, using analysis of variance.

  2. May 1, 2011 · Soils with ortstein occur on lesser slopes (p = 0.001) and at lower elevations (p = 0.015) than soils without ortstein. The lower depth boundary and thickness of the spodic horizon were significantly greater (p = 0.001) in soils with ortstein than in those without ortstein.

  3. Jan 1, 2014 · Origin: Ortstein is usually a hard, partly or entirely cemented illuvial horizon B of podzol or gley-podzol soils, formed as a result of illuviation of aluminum, iron, manganese, and humus compounds from the overlying horizons.

  4. Jan 1, 2014 · Soils bearing ortstein and placic horizons are used for cranberry and blueberry culture, truck crops, and forestry operations but have many limitations for other kinds of land use. The factors influencing the distribution and formation of these cemented horizons are poorly understood.

  7. Soil moisture regime was inferred to control ortstein formation: high water tables restricted the depth of root growth, which limited their potential role in breaking up cementation and maintaining friable soil conditions.
