I love having an OP character that isn't handicapped all the time to create drama. A lot of the reason why people view OPM as such a success, is how the author makes the audience care about so much more than the powers on display. This is exactly what Overlord does and I would dare say to an even greater degree. 3.

I think there are two main reasons for the appeal. The first is the contrast with most isekai. It is not “you wake up powerful in a world made for you to enjoy.”. It is the mc becoming a powerful monster, and steadily becoming more detached from his own humanity.
Overlord is IMO the best isekai (one of my fav anime/story to boot) because it's packed with good and interesting: storyline/plot that has clear goals. characters that tick all anime tropes without being too annoying. they also have relation/tie with other characters that expand more on the story and the author also do not shy away from killing ...

Overlord is definitely an interesting anime. At times, it feels as though there's signs of what could be a great anime, however these signs quickly disappear and the anime goes back to the same boring, repetitive, stereotypical anime.
