the first episode is indeed very heavy on exposition, but with Momonga reminiscing on the past and his dialogue with his guildmate it does not feel too forced IMO
What makes it great is that it is committed to realism and destroying all the naivety that is intrinsically built into the isekai fantasy while still retaining the humour that makes the journey so much more enjoyable. Ains must deal with the ramifications of actually becoming his playable character.
