Origin
In the 2015 adaptation, the Overlords' homeworld is Jenjedda, the sixth planet in the Carina system, located 1100 ly away from Earth. It is a hell-like planet, with advanced chrome cities growing out of lava rivers. One spot emits a beam of light, the Overmind, which has been guiding Overlord civilization for 100 000 years.
On the one hand, it is ironic that the Overlords look like devils, since they effectively take up the role of guardian angels—they step in to stop humanity from destroying itself with nuclear weapons or latent psychic abilities, and they miraculously intervene to rescue Jeffrey from the tsunami.
However, the sense you get from reading the book is that in the end The Overlords didn't actually do anything to set up the final stage and ending. They describe themselves as "midwives" to what would have been an inevitable event even if they never showed up.
No more human children are born and many parents die or commit suicide. When Jan Rodricks returns to Earth, he finds an unexpectedly altered planet. Humanity has effectively become extinct and he is now the last man alive. Some Overlords remain on Earth to study the children from a safe distance.
This is why the Overlords were sent to Earth--sent by the Overmind, a powerful being of thought and energy that absorbs and assimilates races once they have matured enough. Ironically, this is a step that the Overlords have never been able to make and may never be able to.
