A significant portion of the world's population associates the image of the Overlords with the ultimate evil. They claim to be working for basically God, but show anyone a picture of an Overlord before they revealed themselves and most would say it's the opposite of God.
The overlords were merely minions to a malicious hivemind that wanted the collective consciousness of many worlds believing itself to be the only option for whatever species it wanted to genocide. The fact you so easily believe the Overlords without question goes to show how easily believable taking away humanity's autonomy would be in this story.
