He doesn't need a deeper meaning or some kind of redemption, and I felt like the 2010 remake tried to do that. This is a fairly common thing with more modern movies with a YA age-group audience. Redemption is key, nobody is truly bad, and the good guys are always hilariously traumatised beyond normality to fit with the story.
