That's not really as revolutionary as it's often made out to be though--it's just a sign that Beethoven is working in large dimensions. What is really weird about them (and what I feel like never gets commented on) is that the A section's exposition modulates from D minor to C major, rather than the expected F major or A minor, or even the first movement's B-flat major.
