  1. Jul 30, 2024 · Do you get a 'Message not sent' error on your Android device when you send SMS or multimedia messages? Check out 6 easy ways to resolve issues causing the error in this guide.

    • Doublecheck your wireless signal. This might seem like too obvious a thing to consider, but you don’t need a completely dead signal for texts to stop — a weak or intermittent connection might be enough to halt (or at least delay) outgoing texts.
    • Make sure you’re not being blocked the recipient(s). It could be that one or more people have blocked you specifically. Alternately, if you have caller ID off, you may be getting blocked by accident if they’re filtering out unknown callers.
    • Keep contact info up-to-date. It’s entirely possible that you’ve got outdated or mistyped numbers in Google Contacts. Even if you don’t think so, it might be worth running through your contact cards to make sure everything is current.
    • Close Google Messages and reopen it. This is unlikely to help, but there’s a non-zero possibility of a temporary cache or process glitch, in which case restarting the app might help.

    • Force Close and Reopen Messages. Manually force-quit the Messages app to terminate it if it’s unresponsive or some features aren’t working. Your phone will launch Messages on a fresh start when you reopen the app.
    • Close Unneeded Applications. Applications will run slowly if your device is low on memory. If Android Messages keeps crashing or won’t open, close all apps you aren’t using.
    • Set Messages as Default Texting App. If there’s more than one SMS app on your phone, make sure Messages is your default texting application. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Default apps > SMS app and select Messages.
    • Clear the Messages App Cache. After force-closing, delete the app’s cache data and try again if Messages still isn’t working. Open the Messages app menu (Settings > Apps & notifications > App info > Messages), select Storage & cache, and tap Clear Cache.
    • Outages and reception. While very uncommon, there is a chance your carrier network is having an outage. This could be why you have problems with your messaging app not working.
    • Is Airplane mode on? It may seem like a silly suggestion, but you have no idea how often we accidentally switch settings on and off. Maybe you turned Airplane mode on, which will obviously stop Messages (and pretty much any other app) from working.
    • Restart the phone to fix messaging problems. This is a very common troubleshooting tip. While it may sound a bit silly, it very often works! We don’t know what kind of magic happens when you restart a phone, but it’s worth a shot.
    • Check your mobile plan. There is always a chance you forgot to pay your monthly cellphone bill. It happens to the best of us. Additionally, automatic payments can sometimes be declined for no apparent reason.
