Aug 31, 2022 · Market Snapshot: Why Canada is one of the world’s largest electricity consumers. Release date: 2022-08-31. Despite being the 39 th -largest country in terms of population, in 2020 Canada was the fourth-largest consumer of electricity on a per capita (per person) basis, and the sixth-largest producer.
Total end-use energy demand in Canada was 11,059 petajoules (PJ) in 2020. The largest sector for energy demand was industrial at 53% of total demand, followed by transportation at 20%, residential at 14%, and commercial at 13% (Figure 5). In 2020, natural gas was the main energy consumed in Canada, accounting for 4,164 PJ, or 38%, of consumption.
EF2021 considers two main scenarios, where energy supply and demand projections differ based the level of future action to reduce GHG emissions. EF2021 also includes six additional scenarios that explore what Canada’s electricity system might look like in a net-zero world.
- The world will need to supply another United States worth of demand. Global population growth may be slowing, but the world still needs to generate more exajoules in the next few decades to power emerging economies’ growing needs.
- Renewables will account for 20% of global energy needs. While total energy demand will continue to increase, a rising share will come from production of zero emissions and renewable power.
- Peak oil demand is coming—but not yet. Discussions around “peak oil” can miss the bigger picture: An industry can remain dominant for decades even if it never surpasses some past high point.
- Natural gas faces a more uneven transition. The phasing down of coal power is expected to boost demand for natural gas as a transition fuel on an eventual pathway to renewables and battery storage—at least in advanced economies.

Clean energy jobs will grow almost 50% , while jobs in fossil fuels are set to drop 9%, with 208,700 more jobs in clean energy in 2030 and 125,800 fewer jobs in fossil fuels.
