Oct 11, 2024 · Key Takeaways: “Eight Men Out” brings to life the scandalous 1919 Chicago White Sox story, showcasing the temptations and consequences of greed in sports, while highlighting the importance of integrity and fair play.
Eight Men Out. Eight Men Out is a 1988 American sports drama film based on Eliot Asinof 's 1963 book Eight Men Out: The Black Sox and the 1919 World Series. It was written and directed by John Sayles. The film is a dramatization of Major League Baseball 's Black Sox Scandal, in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox conspired with ...
- Believable story. It all goes back to the old “suspension of belief “. Did I really believe that these characters in this story seemed plausible? Did I care about them at least for a minute?
- Great casting. It may sound trite, but the cast on Eight Men Out made for a solid team. Without one superstar in the bunch (both John Cusack and Charlie Sheen were on the way up when this film was made, but surely not yet considered A-list), this group of top-notch role players (or character actors) carried the day (and the series).
- It’s detailed. For period films, I am always looking for the little details that truly represent the times. I don’t know if it is true or not, but allegedly you can see a Roman warrior wearing a Rolex during a crucial scene in Spartacus, one of my favorite movies of all time.
- Plausible dialogue. I hate it when someone does a period film and then uses current terms that surely did not exist then. They spend all this money on costumes, props, etc., and then they drop the ball when it comes to finding the right way of having its characters converse with each other.
This is the central thesis of Eight Men Out: Charles Comiskey’s “ballplayers were the best and were paid as poorly as the worst,” as Eliot Asinof wrote. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We can’t climb into the heads of the Black Sox to know exactly why they threw the World Series.
“Eight Men Out” is an oddly unfocused movie made of earth tones, sidelong glances and eliptic conversations. It tells the story of how the stars of the 1919 Chicago White Sox team took payoffs from gamblers to throw the World Series, but if you are not already familiar with that story you’re unlikely to understand it after seeing this film.
