  1. All in all, Illumination is a disappointment for many reasons. I saw it rise while Pixar fell. Pixar could've been real original had Toy Story 2 never existed, but here comes reality, where Pixar is forced to make sequels as a result of what happened in 2004.

  2. Feb 24, 2024 · Clearly, Illumination has faced criticism for a variety of reasons. While the animation studio has achieved commercial success, it has also received its fair share of backlash from both critics and audiences. Some of the most common reasons for the criticism include lack of originality, overemphasis on merchandising, and simplistic storytelling.

  3. Illumination for me is... fine. But they can do so much better! Their animation style is pretty eye-catching even though not by Disney or Pixar standards... My main criticisms are: - They play too safe with storytelling, overusing narrative tropes to the point they become predictable and pretty dull.

  4. I think Illumination has a terrible rep but trust they will step it up for this movie and deliver something enjoyable. Mario is a pretty hot property (considering how much money it’s worth + how stingy Nintendo have been about adaptations) and they got pretty lucky to land it.

    • Hop. While Hop wasn't Illumination Entertainment's first film, they sure didn't learn any early lessons from the success of Despicable Me. Rather than stick to 100% animation, Hop opted for a hybrid of live-action and animation, plunking poor James Marsden down opposite a computer-generated Easter bunny, as voiced by Russell Brand.
    • Despicable Me 3. The latest effort from Illumination is also among its greatest disappointments. It becomes quite clear while watching Despicable Me 3 that only the lowest common denominators from the series have been culled and distilled into a rather pointless and mindless 90 minutes.
    • Minions. Ah, Minions. There is no real reason for this movie to exist other than as a remarkably successful cash-in on the studio's most successful original creation.
    • The Secret Life of Pets. I had heard a lot of excitement over The Secret Life of Pets from friends, so imagine my disappointment when I discovered that it continued the mean streak kicked off by Minions.
  5. Jul 1, 2024 · Despicable Me 4's continuity issue shows Illumination's lighthearted approach, appealing to children. Disney's focus on adult audiences may have contributed to its recent box office struggles. Realistic details in animation can be enjoyable, but not at the expense of children's fun and imagination.
