- Introduction: The Song of Songs as Wisdom. Are we supposed to learn anything from the Song of Songs? Everyone knows, of course, how beautiful the book is: from the Rabbis to the present day, every book on the Song praises the poetry and the emotions which it expresses.1 What is less clear is how the Song is meant to instruct us—if, in fact, we are supposed to learn anything at all.
- The Hermeneutics of the Song. Francis Landy makes the astute observation that the Song is very difficult to understand if one tries to analyze the text intellectually, but easy to connect with if one engages with the poetry on an emotional level.4 This is in part due to the way in which the Song parachutes us into the subjectivities of the lovers, so that we see the world through their eyes: “we learn about love through what lovers say about it.”
- Do Not Rush Romance. It is very striking that, in a book which adorns romantic love so beautifully, the one repeated refrain tells us in no uncertain terms not to arouse or awaken love until it desires—that we should let love wake up on its own (Song 2:7, 3:5, 8:4).
- The Beauty of Love. The Song of Songs teaches us that love and one’s beloved are almost indescribably beautiful. Even when the imagery jars modern readers (such as the neck like a tower in 4:49), who can resist the young woman’s eyes like doves behind her veil (4:1), her lips like a scarlet thread (v.

Confusion about love, sexuality, and marriage abound in our culture. We need the whole counsel of God to teach us. The Song of Solomon is God’s gift to the church for such a time as this. The Song of Solomon is part of the wisdom literature of the Bible. It gives us a godly perspective on the love between a man and a woman. As we encounter God’s ideal, our shortcomings, sins, and failures become evident. Our appreciation for the gospel grows even deeper as we see new ways that we need the grace of God in Christ. One need not delve i...
The Song of Solomon is unique because the voice of the shepherdess is most prominent in this book. The body of the poem begins (1:2) with a bold declaration of her desire for her beloved, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!” Likewise, the poem ends with her calling out to her beloved, “Make haste, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or a y...
Sexual imagery is powerful. Our culture abounds with images and paradigms that corrupt more than they instruct and wound more than they heal. So much of the culture’s presentation of sexuality is crass, lacking the beauty and mystery that should characterize the physical consummation and enduring love of marriage. A study of the Song of Solomon can...

- When you sing, you obey. Singing isn’t an option in Scripture. It’s a command: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
- When you sing, you dig deep roots in the Word. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly…singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs… (Colossians 3:16)
- When you sing, you build up others. First, you build up fellow believers when you sing: Note specifically here in Ephesians 5:19 that it says: “Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…”
- When you sing, you make war. Chances are you didn’t connect singing and warfare together, but it’s a theme visible in Scripture. In Colossians 3, Paul is challenging the Colossians to literally put sin to death in their lives, to kill sin.
